Purpose & Requirements
- Purpose: Provide for a regular evaluation of pilot skills and aeronautical knowledge (AC 61-98E).
- Frequency: Within previous 24 calendar months of flight as PIC.
- Recommended: Maintain regular, periodic proficiency and skill expansion with a CFI using the FAA "Wings" program vice flight reviews.
- Requirements:: Advisory Circular 61-98E provides guidance but leaves much up to instructor discretion in complying with FAR 61.56:
- Review of current operating and flight rules in FAR Part 91
- Maneuvers and procedures necessary to demonstrate safe exerecise of pilot certificate
Review, Guidance & Preparation
These FAA documents offer detailed guidance for pilots and instructors conducting flight reviews:
My philosophy and approach
A flight review to demonstrate safe exercise of the pilot certificate is pilot-dependent. Consider:- A pilot that uses his Cirrus SR-22 Turbo in all weather and airspace classes every week for his personal business.
- The older pilot who uses his "no-radio" Cub for breakfast trips in good weather, Class E and G airspace only.
- An instrument-rated parent that flies the family on trips but doesn't fly enough to maintain true proficiency.
We will tailor the flight review to YOUR flying style
- We'll cover the aviation "hot topics" from AC 61-98E.
- I'll make sure you're up to date on recent FAR changes (ADS-B, minimum VOR network, MOSAIC)
- We'll agree to PIC duties and the in-flight agenda.
- We'll see if you want to "expand" any of your comfort areas & discuss a future proficiency plan.
- I'll document our discussion and flight topics and endorse your review.
