Review, Guidance & Preparation

These FAA documents offer detailed guidance for pilots and instructors conducting flight reviews:

My philosophy and approach

A flight review to demonstrate safe exercise of the pilot certificate is pilot-dependent. Consider:

  • A pilot that uses his Cirrus SR-22 Turbo in all weather and airspace classes every week for his personal business.
  • The older pilot who uses his "no-radio" Cub for breakfast trips in good weather, Class E and G airspace only.
  • An instrument-rated parent that flies the family on trips but doesn't fly enough to maintain true proficiency.

We will tailor the flight review to YOUR flying style

  • We'll cover the aviation "hot topics" from AC 61-98E.
  • I'll make sure you're up to date on recent FAR changes (ADS-B, minimum VOR network, MOSAIC)
  • We'll agree to PIC duties and the in-flight agenda.
  • We'll see if you want to "expand" any of your comfort areas & discuss a future proficiency plan.
  • I'll document our discussion and flight topics and endorse your review.
